Description

Castrol Molub-Alloy WC™ 880 SF Medium (previously called Castrol Molub-Alloy 880 SF Medium) is a non-solvent containing lubricant developed specifically for use on Monighan Walking Cam mechanisms of large surface mining equipment. Unlike the conventional asphaltic base lubricants, 880 SF Medium exhibits exceptional plasticity and adherence to bearing surfaces over a wide temperature range because of its unique combination of oils and adhesive and tackiness agents. During a relocation (walk), the Monighan cam bearing surfaces are in combined sliding and rolling motion in line contact only. The pressure actually exceeds the yield strength of the metal at contacting asperities (microscopic high spots) creating the potential for high temperature and metal welding. A high content of a solid lubricants not only serves to strengthen the film structure, but also helps to reduce contact temperatures and metal welding. Maximized extreme pressure (EP) characteristics are achieved without the use of lead compounds considered to be undesirable by environmental agencies. The combined action of the film-forming anti-weld components of 880 SF Medium help to eliminate "chatter" and vibration during walks as well as reducing friction, wear and the resultant high costs of repairs and downtime. Formulated to address environmental concerns, Molub-Alloy WC 880 SF Medium is free of lead, barium, zinc, and chlorinated solvents. No solvents of any kind are used in Molub-Alloy WC 880 SF Medium and is manufactured from a select, high viscosity petroleum oil together with other, non-asphaltic, petroleum constituents. These are further fortified with adhesive and tackiness agents plus an inorganic thickener chosen for its flow and film-forming characteristics. "Non-weld" extreme pressure characteristics are provided by a proprietary blend of Molub-Alloy WC lubricating solids of select grade and size distribution working synergistically with chemical EP additives. The unique formulation of Molub-Alloy WC 880 SF Medium accounts for building, under extreme sliding rolling pressures, of a tough, nearly impenetrable lubricating film which resists "melting" or "squeezing" out as well as wiping
or washing off through a broad range of climatic conditions.

Application
The primary application which Molub-Alloy WC 880 SF Medium is intended for is the lubrication of the Monighan Walking Cam mechanism. It does, however, serve to lubricate other bearing surfaces in slow relative motion where pressures are sufficiently high to cause metal deformation at asperities with possible seizing and galling. Typical examples would be heavy sliding mechanisms or large open gears exposed to heavy or shock loading and possibly high ambient temperatures. Heavy duty pressure dispensing equipment is suggested for use in the automatic application of MolubAlloy WC 880 SF Medium which is effectively an NLGI #1 consistency as shipped.
